Last year, I decided to start an online blog, write a novel, amongst other projects I am excited to share soon. I was completely unaware of how overwhelming it can all be, especially when juggling a full-time job. I knew that I had to do something to keep my life in order since I am flooded with lots to do with not a lot of time in a day to do it.
The first thing that came to my mind was to purchase a planner. I was reluctant at first because I’ve used planners before, but they ended up unused and collecting dust. But, I gave it another chance. I needed something that can help manage my long to-do list. So, I went online to search for a planner that fits my needs– something simple. I wanted a planner that I can use at work, projects, and personal.
To my surprise, I came across hundreds of different types of planners. There are planners for bloggers, authors, business owners, and even stay at home mothers. After ‘soul’ searching for the perfect planner, I finally settled on the Simplified Planner by Emily Ley.
I will admit that I had a hard time using the planner at first, mostly with remembering to use it. For that reason, I decided to write a blog post to share my tips on how to best use a planner so that you don’t give up on it.
Find the right and purposeful planner
To me, this is the most important. As mentioned, there are different types of planners in the market. I am sure you can and will find the right one. Do your diligent research, watch YouTube videos, and read their online reviews. Don’t settle for a boring planner; find one that is purposeful to you.
Take it with you wherever you go
Since you will be carrying the planner with you everywhere you go, think about the type of planner you should buy. Will it be a monthly, weekly, or daily planner? Also, consider the size and weight. Do you carry big or small bags? Do you need a light and portable planner to fit in your purse?
I know you won’t be able to take the planner everywhere; the important thing is that you have it with you when you need it the most.
Plan ahead for the entire week
Planning ahead for the week will help you maximize your time. It will remind you of what you have to get done on that week! Set time aside for thirty minutes on Sundays; it will be worth it.
Have your planner on hand at all times
What do I mean by this? Well, when you are home or at work, have your planner out. Do not keep it in your bag or put away when you are done with it. Keep it out and opened on your desk at work or a counter at home. Find a place where you can quickly run to it when you need to write down a reminder or schedule. I keep mine on the dining room table. If your planner is visible, the more you will remember to use it.
Treat it like a friend
Treat your planner like a friend. It is a tool that will keep your life organized. Mistreating it will give it lousy energy, and end up neglected. Generally, anything useful and beneficial should be appreciated and taken care.
Make the most use of the planner
What I mean by making the most out of your planner is to use it frequently. A planner does not have to be something to write your schedule. It can function as a journal, to write your to-do lists, even your grocery list! Be creative with it.
Yes, have fun with your planner. Get stickers, washy tapes, different colored pens to color code and make it pop. Tap into your inner child with your planner, doodle in it if you want. If you have fun using your planner the more prone, you will be to use it.
If you are busy and overwhelmed, I highly recommend investing in a planner. It will change your life! You will gradually learn how to maximize your time and be productive to get the most done.
